## Summary

Screenshots spotted by an ecommerce analyst show OpenAI building analytics that would let verified businesses see how often ChatGPT cites them.

## Article

Juozas Kaziukėnas, a technology analyst who tracks AI commerce developments, posted screenshots to LinkedIn today showing an unreleased OpenAI analytics tool designed for businesses. The interface, which Kaziukėnas says he first observed in August, tracks how often a company appears in ChatGPT conversations and how often users click links to that company's website.

"ChatGPT is building an analytics tool to 'track how often your business is mentioned in ChatGPT conversations,'" Kaziukėnas [wrote on LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/juozas/). He added that the feature displays daily impressions and clicks as a chart and is approaching launch, based on a banner he spotted today.

## What the Screenshots Show

According to Kaziukėnas and reports from [Search Engine Land](https://searchengineland.com/openai-testing-business-tools-to-track-performance-within-chatgpt-500841), the tool would let businesses do three things: track how often they're mentioned in ChatGPT responses, update product information and business details that ChatGPT surfaces, and deploy a business agent that answers customer questions using content the company controls.

The feature sits inside what OpenAI appears to be calling a Business Hub. Access requires verification. Kaziukėnas noted that one verification method involves connecting a Shopify store, which aligns with [broader moves by OpenAI](/news/espressifs-59-esp-mosaico-lets-ai-agents-write-and-flash-the-firmware/) to integrate merchant infrastructure into ChatGPT. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts channel, launched earlier this year, already feeds product catalogs into ChatGPT for shopping recommendations.

What the dashboard will not show: prompts, user data, or competitive benchmarks. "It won't help understanding why mentions/clicks are increasing or decreasing," Kaziukėnas wrote, "but combined with external tools that track prompts it will show accurate first-party data if GEO/AEO strategies are working."

## The Visibility Arms Race

That last point is the interesting one. A cottage industry of third-party tools has sprung up to help marketers track their brands' visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI answer engines. These services reverse-engineer citation behavior from the outside, running prompts and logging which sources get cited. OpenAI offering first-party data would give those external readings a ground-truth baseline for the first time.

Generative Engine Optimization, the clunky acronym marketers have landed on for this work, treats AI chatbots as a new kind of search engine. The pitch is familiar: structure your content so the machine cites you. But the mechanisms are murkier than Google's PageRank ever was. Marketers can't see the training data, can't inspect the retrieval system, and until now couldn't verify whether their efforts moved the needle.

That opacity creates demand for exactly the kind of dashboard Kaziukėnas found. If ChatGPT mentions your business 3,000 times a day but sends only 40 clicks, that's useful information. It suggests ChatGPT is surfacing you as context rather than as a destination. If those numbers flip after you restructure your product pages, you've learned something.

## What OpenAI Gets

The arrangement is not one-sided. A verification flow that requires merchants to claim their business gives OpenAI a direct relationship with those merchants. They can push product feeds, train business agents, and eventually buy [ChatGPT ads](/news/square-ships-1999-ai-kiosk-that-talks-back-to-customers/). The analytics tool, if it launches, becomes an onboarding funnel.

OpenAI has not publicly announced the feature. The company did not respond to questions about availability or a launch timeline. Kaziukėnas, who has previously surfaced details about ChatGPT's ad manager interface before it went wide, noted that the feature has been in development for at least three months.

Whether this becomes a Search Console equivalent depends on how granular the data gets. Google's version shows which queries drive impressions. A ChatGPT version that only shows totals would be useful but limited. Kaziukėnas's screenshots don't show query-level data, and he confirmed the tool omits it by design.

For now, the feature remains in testing. [Anthropic's Claude](/news/anthropic-gives-claude-read-only-access-to-your-bank-account/) and other competitors have not announced comparable tools.
