Sennheiser has announced the Momentum 5 Wireless, updating its flagship noise-canceling headphones for the first time since August 2022. The headphones will be available starting June 16 at $399.99, a $50 increase over the Momentum 4's launch price.
The most notable change is a user-replaceable 700 mAh battery. Owners can swap the power cell themselves using a standard Phillips-head screwdriver, which addresses one of the most persistent complaints about premium wireless headphones: that a degraded battery eventually turns expensive hardware into a paperweight. Sennheiser is positioning this as a longevity and sustainability feature, part of a broader emphasis on extending product lifespan that also includes plastic-free packaging and a carrying case that's 20% smaller than before.

ANC Overhaul
The Momentum 4's weak point was always noise cancellation. Multiple independent measurements put it roughly 5dB behind the Sony WH-1000XM5 in the sub-bass and midrange frequencies where airplane engines and office chatter live. Sennheiser has doubled the microphone count dedicated to ANC and transparency, moving from two mics per side to four. The company claims the new system is up to three times more effective at blocking ambient voice chatter.
Whether that claim holds up under lab testing remains to be seen. But the upgrade reflects user feedback clearly: a SoundGuys survey found that 51% of respondents named improved ANC as their top priority for the next Momentum.
Sound and Wireless
The 42mm transducer returns from the Momentum 4, manufactured at Sennheiser's facility in Tullamore, Ireland, and tuned in the style of the company's HD 600 series. What's new is Hi-Res Audio certification and Snapdragon Sound support, including aptX Lossless codecs. When paired with compatible devices, that means CD-quality audio over Bluetooth with minimal compression artifacts.
The headphones ship with Bluetooth 5.4 and are engineered for a future firmware update to Bluetooth 6.0. A day-one firmware update also unlocks Dolby Atmos with head-tracking for spatial audio content, delivered through the updated Smart Control Plus companion app. That app now includes an 8-band EQ, presets, and a sound personalization engine.
Battery and Design
Battery life sits at 57 hours with ANC engaged, three hours less than the Momentum 4's 60-hour rating. That's a minor regression, but the number still dwarfs the 30 hours offered by the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. A 10-minute quick charge delivers up to 7 hours of playback.
The physical design tracks closely with the Momentum 4. There's no folding mechanism; the headphones lay flat for storage. Sennheiser has added some metal accents, but the overall silhouette is familiar. Colorways include Black, White, and Denim.
Market Position
At $399.99, the Momentum 5 undercuts premium alternatives like Sony's new 1000X The ColleXion ($649) and sits in line with the standard Sony WH-1000XM6 ($450) and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. It's also $100 cheaper than Sennheiser's own HDB 630, which targets more dedicated audiophiles.
The replaceable battery is the most interesting play here. It signals a shift in how Sennheiser is thinking about product cycles, emphasizing repairability over planned obsolescence. That's a rare stance in the consumer electronics industry, and it may resonate with buyers tired of treating expensive headphones as disposable.
U.S. availability begins June 16 through Sennheiser's website and select retailers.
