GoPro has announced the Mission 1 PRO ILS, its first camera with interchangeable lenses. The camera uses a Micro Four Thirds lens mount paired with the same 50MP 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor found in the rest of the Mission 1 lineup. Pre-orders opened today at $699.99, or $599.99 for existing GoPro subscribers, with retail availability beginning in September.
The ILS designation stands for Interchangeable Lens System, and the camera accepts manual-focus, manual-aperture MFT lenses directly or via adapters for PL mount cinema glass and vintage lenses. GoPro estimates compatibility with over 300 lenses. There is a significant caveat: the camera body has no electronic contacts for the lens mount, so autofocus and electronically controlled apertures are not supported.

Sensor, Recording Modes, and the Crop Factor Math
The Mission 1 PRO ILS records 8K at 60 fps, 4K at 240 fps, and 1080p at 960 fps in 16:9 modes. Open Gate capture uses the full 4:3 sensor area at up to 8K30 or 4K120 for maximum post-production flexibility. GoPro claims up to 14 stops of dynamic range from the Quad Bayer sensor, with simultaneous dual-gain readout for single-exposure HDR.
The sensor measures 13.2 x 8.8mm, smaller than the 17.3 x 13mm native Micro Four Thirds standard. The result is a crop factor of approximately 2.7x without stabilization, or 3x with HyperSmooth engaged. A 17mm MFT lens behaves roughly like a 50mm on full-frame. HyperSmooth stabilization works with any rectilinear prime between 6mm and 500mm. Users enter their focal length, and the camera calculates the appropriate amount of correction.
What Sets It Apart
The body weighs 6.95 ounces, or 197 grams. That is lighter than many MFT lenses alone. GoPro pitches the camera for drone rigs, car interiors, and other tight mounting scenarios where larger cinema bodies cannot fit. The camera is weatherproof but not waterproof; the exposed lens mount means the 66-foot depth rating of the fixed-lens Mission 1 models does not apply here.
Audio gets a meaningful upgrade: a four-microphone array with 32-bit float recording. The camera outputs up to 4K60 over HDMI via the Media Mod, supports timecode sync for multi-camera shoots, and includes GPS telemetry. Bit rates reach 240 Mbps in standard modes, or 300 Mbps through GoPro Labs firmware. A new free MISSION Monitor app for iPhone and iPad provides professional monitoring tools including focus peaking, LUT previews, and zebra patterns.
Reception and Competition
The camera already has industry validation. At NAB 2026, the Mission 1 PRO ILS won CineD's Best-of-Show Award in the Camera category and a ProductionHUB Award of Excellence. Editor's Choice recognition has come from Tom's Guide, PCMag, Gizmodo, Mashable, Digital Camera World, RedShark News, and The Shortcut.
Direct competitors are hard to name. The Engadget review notes that DJI's Osmo Action 6 offers variable aperture but far fewer lens options, while traditional MFT cameras like the Sony ZV-E10 have autofocus but lack the rugged form factor. The Blackmagic Micro Studio 6K remains an option for those who want more professional outputs, but it is neither weatherproof nor anywhere close to this compact.
Whether the Mission 1 PRO ILS is an action camera, a mirrorless camera, or something new entirely depends on how you intend to use it. GoPro is betting there is a market for shooters who want cinematic depth of field and lens versatility in a body small enough to strap to a helmet. The $699 price point puts it below most cinema rigs and above most action cameras, in a gap the company seems determined to own.
